Wood Types
Engineered
MDF or Medium-density fiberboard is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibers. Usually this product is defect free in appearance, dent resistant and more flexible than regular wood but is susceptible to deteriorate quicker than regular wood in the presence of excessive moisture. The price of this product is usually cheaper or right around the same price of its primed pine counterpart. This is also used for a painted finish comparable in appearance to softwoods.
Softwoods
Lumber used for rough carpentry such as framing are also commonly used for finish products such as trim moldings. The price of softwoods comparable to hardwoods are in general for the finish or painted rather than stained.
Hardwoods
These are used mostly for trim moldings, veneers, and high quality furniture. Hardwoods are typically the most expensive option when it comes to wood selection. In general hardwoods are finished with a stain rather than paint.
